Have you been feeling bored with life lately? Like everything seems to be dull, pointless, and just plain empty? Although boredom is normal, it can be damaging to your state of mind if prolonged. There are numerous things that trigger this, that’s why it’s highly advised that you do something about it in order to overcome boredom.

I’ve recently been feeling bored and uninspired both at home and at work. It’s not a fun feeling and it’s definitely taking a toll on me. Repeatedly doing the same things for too long can be tiring and I’ve been constantly seeking solutions to work on it.

Listed below are things I’ve personally experienced that may sound familiar to you too:

1. Work becomes a routine

Doing the same task every day could drive you insane – literally and figuratively speaking! You dread going to work and feel unmotivated in everything you do. There are several other factors that contribute to work boredom:

  • Lacks opportunity for professional growth
  • Poor management
  • It’s just not your passion

2. You rarely meet up with friends

Let’s be honest here, I bet there’s been a time that you just felt really lazy and turned down every invite from friends. I’m an introvert, so I know how it feels to not want to see other people during your free time. But trust me when I say this, too much alone time isn’t a good thing and will cost you your social life.

3. Haven’t achieved some of your goals

Growing up I’ve always had this dream of starting my own business and earning my first million at the age of 25. Years have passed and I’m turning 28 with no business (except for this blog that would hopefully turn into a side hustle) and no savings. Goals are something that drives you to keep going despite the hardships you face. But having too high or too many goals and not being able to achieve them in your given time frame can do the complete opposite.

4. You have no hobby

A hobby can be anything that you enjoy doing. From collecting certain things, doing sports, to even just playing video games. Not having a hobby or anything that you can be passionate about can be a complete downer.

Staying motivated isn’t always easy but there are things you can do to hopefully overcome boredom:

1. Learn something new

You could talk to your boss and try asking him to help with your professional development. If that doesn’t work, do something on your own. Like what I did during my yearly evaluation. I tried telling them about how I felt like I’m not growing in the company and would like to learn something new. They did say that they were looking for classes or training we could take to further enhance our knowledge in digital marketing. Unfortunately, almost a year has passed and still no sign of improvement. I decided to take matters into my own hands and created this blog to self-study. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone! You learn something new related to your work while creating your own brand that you can be passionate about.

2. Reach out to friends

It won’t be that easy to reach out to friends you lost touch with. Especially if those were people you used to be close friends with but kept rejecting their invites. You can invite them for a change. Try asking them to watch a movie together or just get coffee at a nearby coffee shop to catch up.

3. Do things one step at a time

I know how frustrating it is to be a 20 something who hasn’t achieved much of her dreams in life. But I realized that I can’t do it all at once. You shouldn’t rush yourself as it would only stress you out. Taking little steps towards your goals is okay. It’s not how fast you accomplished things, it’s the little things you did that matters.

4. Figure out what you want to do

Try looking for something that piques your interest. What are you good at? What is it that you’ve always wanted to try? If you’ve thought of something, start from there. It may be a skill you already have and want to develop or something new that excites you. Whatever you choose, as long as it brings you joy, go for it!

I didn’t write this post because I’ve already overcome boredom. It’s a constant struggle that I continuously try to work on.

If boredom has struck you, I highly suggest that you do something about it. Don’t sit around and wait for it to go away on its own because it most likely won’t. Just letting it be might lead to depression or worse.
