Since the start of 2020, there has been a whirlwind of heartbreaking events all over the globe. And now, we’re facing a pandemic which is affecting the lives of millions of people worldwide.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 which originated from Wuhan, China has already taken so many lives and will continue to do so if we still can’t find a cure or to even just contain it. It has created uncertainty, distraught, fear, and anger. A mix of emotions that either brought the worst or the best in people.

I’ve read several news articles about the awful things people have done during this crisis. Listed below are just some of them:

  • Hoarders took advantage of the situation by selling alcohol, masks and other necessities at a higher price.
  • Discriminated health workers and other frontliners by kicking them out of their boarding house, not letting them near the community where they live, and attacking them physically.
  • Reported an establishment to shut down its operation that allowed the homeless to use it as shelter throughout the duration of the enhanced community quarantine.
  • Attempted to burn down an establishment used as a quarantine and isolation area for COVID-19 PUIs or persons under investigation.
  • A landlord kicked a tenant out because she wasn’t able to pay the rent since she wasn’t able to go to work because of this quarantine.
  • Residents threw stones at a household whose head of the family died of COVID-19 after they found out that other family members tested positive for the viral infection as well.

Thankfully, despite the bad things people have done, there are still some kind-hearted individuals willing to go through lengths to help fight this pandemic whether they are wealthy and well-known personalities or an ordinary citizen:

  • Fashion designers, crafters, sewers, and other ordinary citizens made PPEs or personal protective equipment that frontliners can use while there’s a shortage of supply.
  • Numerous showbiz personalities and artists, and other well-known individuals using their talent and fame to raise funds and even using their own money to help the less fortunate and frontliners to provide them with food, shelter, and PPEs.
  • Some employers making sure that their employees are well-off during the community quarantine by providing them with groceries and financial aid.
  • Different organizations offering their establishment as a temporary shelter for frontliners.
  • Some landlords showed initiative to give their tenants a free month-long stay even before the Bayanihan Law was enacted.
  • Business owners giving free food to anyone who needs it especially the less fortunate and frontliners.
  • Ordinary citizens and sometimes even the less fortunate helping as much as they can, the best way they can. Whether it be food, DIY PPEs, or being a volunteer frontliner.

During this difficult time, the best way to fight this virus is by being united. You can’t beat it on your own, you’ll need everyone’s cooperation no matter what your status in life is.

Let’s stop the hate and just help each other especially our real-life heroes who are risking their lives so we can survive this pandemic and have a brighter tomorrow.

Stay safe and help save the world by staying at home.
